My dog is anxious

Anxiety in dogs can show up in many different ways. At Henny Penny Pet Corner we hear about it all the time—dogs that panic at the vet, dogs that can’t be left home alone, dogs that shut down around other dogs, or pups that struggle during thunderstorms, fireworks, or even car rides.

The important thing to know is that anxiety isn’t a personality flaw, and it isn’t something your dog simply has to live with. In many cases it’s a sign that the nervous system needs support.

Common Reasons Dogs Experience Anxiety

Several things can contribute to anxiety in dogs, including:

A nervous system that is overstimulated or out of balance and hasn’t been properly supported nutritionally

Chronic stress that slowly depletes the body’s ability to regulate itself

Past trauma or limited socialization

Gut imbalance, since the gut and brain communicate closely through the nervous system

Nutritional deficiencies that affect neurotransmitters and mood regulation

When these pieces stack up, a dog’s ability to stay calm and regulated can suffer.

Where To Start

1️⃣ Support the Nervous System

Before immediately turning to sedatives or medications, it’s worth asking whether your dog’s nervous system has the nutritional support it needs. Adaptogenic herbs, medicinal mushrooms, and calming botanicals can help the body find balance rather than simply overriding the symptoms.

2️⃣ Try a Targeted Calming Formula

Calming blends designed for dogs combine supportive herbs and mushrooms to help regulate stress responses naturally. These products don’t sedate or make dogs groggy—they simply help the nervous system settle into a calmer baseline.

3️⃣ Support the Gut

The connection between the gut and the brain is very real. When the gut microbiome is out of balance, it can affect mood, stress tolerance, and overall behavior. Probiotics, goat milk, and a more natural diet can play a big role in improving how a dog handles stress over time.

4️⃣ Improve the Diet

Highly processed diets can impact a dog’s mood and cognitive health just like poor nutrition can affect mental health in people. A fresh, whole-food diet provides the nutrients the brain and nervous system need to function properly.

A Note on Medication

We fully respect veterinary medicine and understand that there are situations where medication is necessary and helpful. Our goal is not to replace veterinary care, but to offer natural support that can often help before stronger interventions are needed.

Many dogs respond incredibly well to the right combination of nutrition and natural support. And if your dog is already on medication, many of these options can still be used alongside it with guidance from your veterinarian.
