My dog is itchy

Our Story

Why Is My Dog So Itchy?

If your dog is constantly scratching, licking their paws, chewing at their legs, or shaking their head, it can be stressful for both of you. The good news? Itchiness almost never appears out of nowhere—it usually has an underlying cause. At Henny Penny Pet Corner, we focus on finding the root of the problem, not just masking the symptoms.

Common Reasons Dogs Get Itchy

Itching is a sign, not the diagnosis itself. Some of the most common triggers include:

High-starch or kibble-heavy diets that fuel inflammation and yeast from the inside out

Food sensitivities or intolerances that silently activate the immune system

Yeast overgrowth thriving in warm, sugary environments

Weakened skin barrier that allows irritants to penetrate easily

Gut imbalances that often show externally before showing in stool

Seasonal or environmental allergies that stress an already taxed immune system

Often, it’s not just one of these—it can be a combination that makes your dog extra uncomfortable.

Where to Begin

Our approach starts with the food, because no supplement can fully work if the diet is contributing to the problem.

1️⃣ Upgrade the Diet

Switching to a species-appropriate, low-starch diet removes one of the biggest triggers for inflammation and yeast. Even small steps help: replacing 20% of kibble with fresh food toppers or adding nutrient-rich fresh foods can make a noticeable difference.

2️⃣ Support Gut Health

The gut and skin are closely connected. Probiotics, goat milk, and other digestive support products help restore balance from the inside, which often reduces external symptoms.

3️⃣ Help the Immune System

Chronic itch is frequently linked to an overactive immune response. Functional mushrooms, colostrum, and immune-supporting supplements can help calm the system rather than just masking the symptoms.

4️⃣ Soothe the Skin

Once the internal systems are being supported, topical care can provide relief while the skin heals. Balms, sprays, and gentle rinses help reduce inflammation and prevent further irritation.

A Note About Supplements

You’ll notice we haven’t included food in this collection—and that’s intentional. Food is almost always part of the solution. Supplements are most effective when paired with a diet that supports health from the inside out. A diverse, fresh diet provides the foundation everything else builds on. Supplements alone aren’t enough—they can’t fix a poor diet.

If you’re unsure where to start, or how to introduce fresh foods without completely overhauling your dog’s meals, come chat with us. That conversation is always free—and it’s always worth your time.
