My dog is slowing down

There’s something many pet parents don’t hear until their dog is already struggling.

Joint support shouldn’t start when your dog can no longer jump on the couch or climb the stairs. Ideally, it should begin much earlier.

When dogs begin hesitating before jumping, taking longer to get up from a nap, or losing interest in walks they once loved, joint wear has usually been developing quietly for years. The encouraging part is that support can help at any stage. Whether your dog is young, starting to slow down, or already experiencing mobility issues, there are natural ways to support their joints and comfort without jumping straight to prescriptions or injections.

What We’re Hearing From Pet Parents

Recently we’ve talked with many pet parents whose dogs were placed on monthly injectable arthritis medications, and some of them are now looking for more natural options. Sometimes it’s because of side effects, and sometimes it’s simply because they want a long-term approach that works with their dog’s body.

What we often see when dogs move to a natural joint support routine is encouraging. Over time, many pet parents notice improved movement, more interest in walks, and dogs who seem more comfortable and active again. It’s not usually an overnight change, but it’s steady and supportive of the body rather than forcing it.

Natural joint support works by helping the body repair and maintain itself, instead of overriding the symptoms.

Why Dogs Develop Joint Problems

Joint issues are extremely common in dogs, but many of the contributing factors are preventable or manageable.

Some of the most common causes include:

Normal wear and tear from years of movement

Large or giant breeds, which naturally put more stress on their joints

High-impact activity without the nutrition needed to support cartilage and connective tissue

Inflammatory diets high in starch and processed ingredients

Genetic predispositions, such as hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, or early arthritis

The earlier you start supporting joint health, the more you help preserve mobility long term.

Where To Start

1️⃣ Start With Green Lipped Mussel

Green lipped mussel is one of the most well-researched natural ingredients for joint support. It contains omega fatty acids, glucosamine, chondroitin, and antioxidants that work together to support cartilage health and reduce inflammation.

It’s a great foundation for joint support at any age, from puppies to senior dogs.

2️⃣ Add Eggshell Membrane or a Joint Support Blend

Eggshell membrane naturally contains collagen, hyaluronic acid, and glucosamine, all of which help support joint cushioning and flexibility.

Joint formulas that combine multiple supportive ingredients can also make daily supplementation simple. Some pet parents choose to rotate supplements occasionally to provide a variety of nutrients.

3️⃣ Focus on an Anti-Inflammatory Diet

Diet plays a huge role in joint health. Fresh, low-starch foods help reduce inflammation in the body, which protects the joints over time.

If a dog is taking joint supplements but still eating a highly processed, high-starch diet, that diet can work against the progress you’re trying to make. Nutrition always matters.

4️⃣ Add Bone Broth

Bone broth is a simple addition that can make a big difference. It contains collagen and amino acids that help support connective tissue and joint health.

It’s also gentle, affordable, and easy to add to any dog’s bowl.

For Dogs Already Struggling

If your dog is already showing clear signs of mobility issues, there are additional ways to support them depending on their breed, age, and overall condition. Building a more targeted joint support plan can often make a noticeable difference in comfort and activity levels.

A Note on Prevention

If your dog is young and active, this information is still important.

Supporting joint health early is one of the best long-term investments you can make in your dog’s quality of life. Starting something as simple as green lipped mussel early can help preserve mobility for years to come.

Many of us wish we had learned that sooner — so now we’re sharing it with you.
